Good Morning!
After waking up at 3:30 the last few days, today’s 5:45 stirring was a welcome change. With that movie festival coming up, I’ve been a little worried that I’d have to miss some films due to needing a nap in the middle of the day. Hopefully, this is the start of a more normal rhythm.
We’ve also been doing a healthy food reset over here at Chateau Pequeno. Sunday will be the last day of it, and so far it’s gone pretty well. I’ve lost some weight, and feel a lot better about my general relationship with food. We’ll see how that holds up once we’re back to a more normal eating schedule, but at least we found some good, healthy recipes to add to the rotation. Any bad food habits around here are my fault, and it’s probably better for both me and the wife if I don’t focus so many of our meals around a large slab of red meat. So there’s another welcome change we’ll hope stays consistent!
Spoopy season is in full swing around these parts, with a horror movie every night and this weekend dedicated to getting the decorations up at last. We’re hitting up seasonal megastore Spirit later today, as some of our decorations we’ve had since we bought the house 12 years ago are starting to deteriorate. We’re also planning on our first camping trip in a long time, which will double as my second ever -- I’m not as outdoorsy as my partner. So we’ll also visit Cabelas for a tent to fit both us and our pair of pooches. The cat has to work, so she’ll be staying home for this one. The Japanese stock markets where she makes her fortune never sleep, as they say.
Updates to Mortal Kombat 1 and WWE 2K24 have brought me back to those games lately. 2K’s latest character pack included Jade Cargill, bird enthusiast Lyra Valkyria, Dragon Lee, Michelle McCool, Nia Jax, Carlito, and Kairi Sane. That’s a solid amount, although I personally think they were trying to make good after the Pat McAffee pack that nobody was exactly clamoring for. I’ll have to remember that for next year when I’m lured into a preorder again…maybe just the base game next time around.
The MK1 expansion is a little more substantial. Noob Saibot, Cyrax, and Sektor were all added as playable characters, with the T-1000, Ghostface, and Conan the Barbarian coming in the future. There’s also a full storyline continuation I haven’t jumped into yet, so that should be a lot of fun. I’ve enjoyed the story Netherrealm has been telling with Mortal Kombat ever since the reboot from 9, and it’ll be interesting to see where Fire God Liu Kang goes next.
But I digress! This is a wrestling blog, and lots of wrestling happened this week! I was absolutely wrong about Bad Blood, which is happening NEXT week and not this weekend as I’d previously thought. But we got some fun additions to the card, including Dominik Mysterio being added to the Liv Morgan / Rhea Ripley championship match. He won’t be participating so much as swinging above the ring in a shark cage, but we’ve seen enough of those to know he’ll have something up his sleeve. Punk and Drew continue to be the highlight of the show, although the Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes cinematic thing from Georgia Tech last week might not be too far behind. That scene wouldn’t have felt out of place in a Michael Bay movie, hokey dialogue and all.
Nia Jax has been having a lot of fun as Queen and women’s champ on SmackDown, and the group that has kinda formed around her with Tiffany Stratton and Pretty Deadly has been a joy to watch. Whether she faces Bayley or Naomi, or that match becomes a triple threat, I think Nia will likely hold for now. At least until Stratton inevitably betrays her.
It is a little odd that Damien Priest / Finn Balor has become something of an afterthought, but since it’s still connected to Liv and Rhea and the whole Judgment Day thing, it’ll still make sense on the day. Plus I have faith that these two should put on a decent match!
AEW had a helluva week, with Grand Slam kicking off on Wednesday. Seriously, if you only watch one match this week, make it the tag team title match between the Young Bucks and Kyle Fletcher and Will Ospreay. The athleticism on display in that match is second to none, and there was a good story told throughout as well.
Bryan Danielson and Nigel McGuinness had a match years in the making to kick off the show, and it was pretty incredible to see these two re-ignite their rivalry from Ring of Honor. It’s probably the last time they’ll ever share a ring, and while there was a bit of rust on Nigel, I came away entertained and even a little moved that they pulled off such a good match with a short build. I mean, short if you don’t count McGuinness’s years of running down Danielson while Nigel was on commentary, that is.
We also saw HOOK retire the FTW title after defeating Roddy Strong in one of HOOK’s better matches in AEW. Roddy and his pals in the Undisputed Kingdom gave HOOK the handshake of respect after the match, and HOOK returned the title to its rightful owner, his dad, Taz. You could see the emotion Taz had when his son gave him that belt, and I thought it was a nice end to a title that really didn’t have a place in AEW anyway.
Oh! And MVP debuted in a promo/manager challenge to Prince Nana, beloved partner to the currently missing Swerve Strickland. MVP’s appearance implies Bobby Lashley or Shelton Benjamin (or both) might be appearing sooner than later, so that’s pretty exciting.
And that’s it! As I said last week, I plan on doing a preview for Bad Blood before the PLE, which means next week. HOWEVER, with camping plans currently floating, it may be a Saturday morning post rather than our usual Friday date. The week after will be Telluride and my birthday, so we’ll see how things shake out. I’ll try to write something and schedule it for publishing on that Friday, but you never know with this wacky life I lead as an amateur man of leisure/ house cholo extrordinaire/ aspiring writer.
